HAVANA: The status of the two Malaysian detainees in the high-security Guantanamo Bay prison will be among the issues Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will raise when he meets US President George W. Bush tomorrow.

The Prime Minister said he was not told of the issues Bush wanted to discuss with him at the meeting in New York but added he would take the opportunity to raise the matter if time permitted.

“What’s important is that we want the Malaysians to get justice,” he told Malaysian journalists at the end of the 14th Non-Aligned Movement Summit here yesterday.

He added that Wisma Putra was also making arrangements to send a representative to the United States to get more details on the detainees.

Besides this, Abdullah said the Middle East issue and others related to Islam and Muslims would feature prominently in the discussion with Bush as these were current and urgent.

“Issues pertaining to Islam is a major concern at the moment and discussed by everybody. I will convey my views as a leader of an Islamic country,” he added.

Abdullah said he had many matters to discuss with Bush and hoped there would be enough time to do so.

The Prime Minister will also be meeting United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

The White House had said last week that Bush would meet Abdullah and leaders from five other countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly beginning this week.

The others are Salvador President Elias Antonio Saca, Honduras President Manuel Zelaya Rosales, Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete, French President Jacques Chirac and Iraq President Jalal Talabani.
