ALERT: Thank you to all who helped ex-Gitmo Uighur to fund prosthetic leg
Last month Cageprisoners and the Guantanamo Justice Centre issued an appeal for funds on behalf of the US lawyers of Ahmad Abdulahad. Ahmad is an ex-Guantanamo prisoner of Uighur origin who was resettled on the tiny pacific island of Palau upon his release. Ahmad is a transtibial amputee who lost his leg not long after being transferred to Guantanamo Bay. Without the proper prosthetic leg he had no way of rebuilding his life.
The US lawyers for Ahmad Abdulahad have now reached the target goal of $15,000. Cageprisoners, GJC, Ahmad Abdulahad and his lawyers would like to give their thanks to all those people who contributed.
Ahmed has sent a personal message of thanks which he wanted conveyed to all those who supported him:
"I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Cageprisoners, its members and supporters. Your contributions will allow me to rehabilitate and to regain my mobility after the most painful chapter of my life. I am hopeful for the opportunity to walk independently again, to find gainful employment and to rebuild my life. Owing to your advocacy and generosity, my hopes can now be realized. Thank you."
The US lawyers of Ahmad Abdulahad would like to make clear that any additional funds that trickle in will still be put to good use for any incidental costs that arise (e.g. shipping materials not available in Palau to build the prosthesis) and any funds after that will be put towards similarly vital resettlement needs such as family reunification.
Cageprisoners is a human rights NGO that exists to raise awareness of the plight of the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and other detainees held and abused as part of the War on Terror. We aim to give a voice to the voiceless.
