TEHRAN – The Islamic Information Dissemination Organization (IIDO) issued a statement on Saturday condemning the U.S. military forces for desecrating the Holy Quran in the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The IIDO also condemned the Washington Post for publishing a caricature insulting Islam. Parts of the statement are as following: “After the U.S. and its allies realized that the essence of the Islamic Revolution in Iran is Islam and its redemptive teachings, they were forced into planning a conspiracy against Islam and its holy book Quran. Now, the perpetrators of that abortive plot have once more targeted the Holy Quran and the sanctities of more than one billion Muslims worldwide. Their offensive measure proved yet again that these forces have no idea of Islam’s spiritual power but their efforts will go to nowhere due to the Muslims’ awareness throughout the world. The IIDO stresses the necessity for Muslim nations and governments to keep as vigilant and awareness as possible toward the cultural attacks that are made by enemies of Islam.” The Arab League also called on Washington Saturday to deal with forces responsible for the desecration of Quran with the seriousness needed, AFP reported. It called on U.S. authorities to "impose the maximum penalty possible" on anyone convicted of "involvement in this heinous crime or planning it" and offer guarantees that it will not happen again. The statement added that Muslims the world over deserved an apology for the disrespect shown to their holy book. The United States has promised action against soldiers who defiled copies of the Quran by leaving them in toilet cubicles and even stuffing one down a lavatory to rattle Muslim prisoners.
